What to Pack for Grand Cayman: The Complete Packing List
Everything you actually need for Grand Cayman. Reef-safe sunscreen, dry bags, water shoes, underwater cameras, and the things most travelers forget.
By Best Day Cayman
You are standing at the edge of a boat, turquoise water below you, a sandbar full of wild stingrays 30 feet ahead. The sun is relentless, the water is warm, and in your bag you have exactly what you need. That feeling of being prepared for the best day of your trip starts before you leave home.
Grand Cayman is one of the most rewarding Caribbean destinations to visit. It is also one where the wrong gear can genuinely ruin your day. The wrong sunscreen gets you turned away at the reef. Wet phones, soaked wallets, and missing water shoes are avoidable problems that happen to underprepared visitors every single week.
This list covers everything you actually need. Nothing extra. Nothing you will regret carrying.
Sun Protection: Non-Negotiable
The Caribbean sun in Grand Cayman is stronger than you expect, even on cloudy days, and the reflection off the water doubles the intensity.
Reef-safe sunscreen (SPF 50 or higher) This is not optional. Many snorkel and dive sites in Grand Cayman require reef-safe mineral sunscreen by law, and standard chemical sunscreens are damaging to the coral reef. Look for sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as the active ingredients. Bring more than you think you need. Shop reef-safe sunscreen on Amazon
Reef-safe sunscreen for children If you are traveling with kids, pack a separate formula made for sensitive skin. Children burn faster and are in the water longer. Shop kids reef-safe sunscreen on Amazon
UV-protective rash guard A long-sleeve rash guard does more than sunscreen for extended time in the water. It covers your back and arms during boat rides and snorkeling, and it dries in minutes on deck. Shop rash guards on Amazon
Wide-brim hat For time on the beach, on the dock, and between activities. Packable styles travel flat and pop back into shape. Shop packable sun hats on Amazon
After-sun lotion or aloe vera gel Even with good sunscreen, the reflected UV from Grand Cayman’s water gets you. Pack aloe. Your shoulders will thank you on day two. Shop after-sun aloe on Amazon
Water Activity Essentials
Grand Cayman’s main draws are in the water. These are the items that make the difference between a great experience and a frustrating one.
Dry bag A waterproof dry bag protects your phone, wallet, and camera during boat tours, kayaking, and beach days where waves or spray can reach your things. A 10-liter size works for a day bag. A 20-liter fits a change of clothes. Shop dry bags on Amazon
Water shoes Ironshore rock lines parts of Grand Cayman’s coast and some entry points into the water. Reef shoes or water shoes with grip protect your feet and make entries and exits from boats much more comfortable. Shop water shoes on Amazon
Snorkel mask and fins (optional but worth it) If you are doing multiple water activities, bringing your own snorkel mask gives you a better fit than rental gear. Fins are not necessary for Stingray City but make reef snorkeling much easier. Shop snorkel masks on Amazon
Waterproof phone case Even if you are not the kind of person who brings a dedicated camera, a waterproof phone case lets you capture the moment when a stingray swims directly toward you. The ones that go around your neck are the most practical. Shop waterproof phone cases on Amazon
Camera and Photo Gear
The underwater scenes in Grand Cayman are genuinely extraordinary. Stingray City, the coral reef at Starfish Point, the bioluminescent water at night: these are the images you will want to keep.
Action camera (GoPro or similar) The gold standard for underwater video and photo in Grand Cayman. Mounts to your wrist or a float, shoots 4K, and is designed for exactly this kind of trip. Shop action cameras on Amazon
Floating wrist strap If you bring a GoPro or underwater camera, attach a floating wrist strap. Cameras dropped overboard in 30 feet of water are a common and expensive mistake. Shop floating camera straps on Amazon
Extra memory cards and a portable charger Running out of storage or battery on tour day is a solvable problem. Solve it at home. Shop memory cards on Amazon Shop portable chargers on Amazon
Clothing and Everyday Items
Two or more swimsuits You need at least two. One in the water, one drying. A wet swimsuit under clothes is uncomfortable and takes hours to dry in the humidity.
Lightweight cover-up or linen shirt For moving between beach, restaurant, and shops. George Town has a casual-but-not-swimwear culture when you are away from the water.
Comfortable walking sandals Seven Mile Beach is walkable. George Town is walkable. You will not need hiking shoes, but you will want something more than flip-flops if you are spending time on the rocky East End coast. Shop walking sandals on Amazon
Small first aid kit and motion sickness tablets Boat tours on the North Sound are generally calm, but if you are prone to motion sickness, take a tablet before boarding. Pack basic blister care for new sandals. Shop motion sickness tablets on Amazon

- Confirmation of your booked tours

What to Leave Behind
- Aerosol sunscreen. Not reef-safe and not allowed at many snorkel sites.
- Inflatable pool floats. These are not practical for the water activities in Grand Cayman.
- Heavy hiking gear. Grand Cayman is not a hiking destination.
- Too many clothes. You will live in swimwear and one or two casual outfits.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is reef-safe sunscreen required in Grand Cayman? It is required at many snorkel and dive sites, and strongly recommended everywhere on the island. Standard chemical sunscreens with oxybenzone and octinoxate are harmful to coral and are being phased out across the Caribbean. Pack reef-safe before you arrive. It is available on the island but more expensive than bringing your own.
Do I need to bring a snorkel mask to Grand Cayman? Tour operators provide snorkel gear as part of most water tours. That said, rental masks are shared equipment and a personal mask gives you a better fit. If you do regular water activities, it is worth bringing your own.
Can I bring my regular sunscreen to Grand Cayman? Technically yes, but you may be asked to use reef-safe sunscreen at certain sites and operators. To avoid any issues and to protect the reef, pack mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide from home.
What kind of camera is best for Stingray City? A GoPro or similar waterproof action camera mounted to your wrist or a floating strap. Your phone in a good waterproof case works well for photos. For video of the stingrays swimming around you, an action camera is the best investment.
Is Grand Cayman good for a beach vacation? Yes. Seven Mile Beach is one of the best beaches in the Caribbean, with calm, clear water and soft white sand. For snorkeling, Stingray City, and water tours, Grand Cayman is one of the top destinations in the region.
